Are you tired of the 9-to-5 grind?

Dreaming of working from home on your own schedule?

If so, you're in the right place!

Today, we’re diving into the best online jobs that not only allow you to work solo from home but also have the potential to earn you a solid income of $6,000 or more per month.

And the best part? These aren’t your typical virtual assistant gigs or Etsy shops—these are jobs with real earning potential that you can start today.

We’re going to walk through:

  • Which online job fits you based on your current skill set

  • Which corporate roles might align with these jobs

  • Tips on where to start if one of these catches your eye

1. Content Creator/Influencer

A recent survey showed that 57% of Gen Z wants to become influencers, and I get it—it sounds like a dream job.

Who wouldn’t want to make money posting videos and photos online or writing an article here and there?

Whether you want to be a content creator on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or even an old-fashioned blog, the basic idea is the same:

  1. Pick a niche

  2. Create content

  3. build a following

  4. monetize that audience

But how exactly does that work?

Here’s How You Make Money:

  • Affiliate Marketing: Promote products you love and earn a commission on sales made through your affiliate links. For example, if you post about redecorating your living room, you can link to the furnishings you used, and earn money when your followers buy those items.

  • Ad Revenue: Platforms like YouTube share ad revenue with you based on the number of views your videos get.

  • Sponsored Content: Companies will pay you to showcase their products to your audience. For example, if your audience is new moms, a stroller company might pay you to advertise their products.

The Corporate Equivalent:

Think of it as a mix of marketing, copywriting, and being a spokesperson. You’re essentially getting attention and directing it to products, which is very similar to what marketing roles do in the corporate world.

How Much Can You Earn?

  • On my own YouTube channel with under 10,000 subscribers, I made $10,000 from ad revenue in 2023. And I’ve been pitched partnerships ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per video, even with a relatively small channel.

  • If you build a large following, the earnings can be substantial. For instance, Kara & Nate, the world’s biggest travel influencers, shared that they made seven figures from a mix of sponsorships, brand deals, and YouTube ad revenue in a year.

  • On Instagram, influencers can earn anywhere from $10 to $10,000 per post, depending on their follower count. With the ability to do multiple sponsored posts per month, earning $6,000 a month is definitely within reach.

How to Get Started:

  • Building an audience is key, but it’s a long game.

It takes years of unpaid hours creating content before you’ll earn a single cent. That’s the reason I didn’t stick with content creation as my main online job.

While I loved creating content (and still do—it’s a massive part of my business today), I quickly realized that offering 1:1 services would bring in income much faster.

  • For those interested, here’s a video by Erin May Henry that explains how to start in the influencing game.

Don’t go watch it just yet, but definitely save it for later!

2. Squarespace Designer

Now, let’s talk about the next online job I pivoted to—Squarespace design.

If you’re like me, learning to code puts you to sleep. Coding just isn’t my thing, but making pretty things on the internet? That’s totally my thing.

Luckily, early on in my content creation days, I stumbled upon Squarespace. You’ve probably heard of them—they’ve sponsored every podcast like ever in the last 10 years).

They’re an easy-to-use web design platform that doesn’t require coding skills, making it perfect for creative people like us.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design and build websites for small business owners who are either technophobic or too busy to DIY their own Squarespace sites. They’ll hire you to take their content, photos, and branding and turn it into a functional, beautiful website.

The Corporate Equivalent:

  • If you’ve ever been tasked with updating a website, posting a blog, or designing something in Canva in your corporate job, it’s kind of the same idea—but you’re doing this as a freelancer for small businesses, not your 9-to-5 employer.

How Much Can You Earn?

  • Beginner designers might charge $2,000 - $3,000 per site. But the real magic happens as you gain experience.

  • Successful designers who have been at it for a couple of years and produce stunning sites charge $10,000 - $15,000 per project. Considering these projects typically take a couple of weeks to complete, the income potential is chef’s kiss.

Why I Love This Job:

  • The best thing about Squarespace? It’s like the Canva of web design.

You drag and drop elements on the page to create a site, rather than writing lines of code. For someone who’s creative but allergic to coding, this was a dream come true.

  • I’d always loved painting and pottery, but handmade items don’t make for the best business model.

Squarespace design, however, was the perfect way to channel my creativity into something that met a real need—businesses need websites, I love designing beautiful pages, and Squarespace made it all possible.

How to Get Started:

  • Squarespace can easily be learned but there are definitely some insider tricks you’ll want to pick up in order to truly design original feeling websites for your clients.

  • There is also a whole lot of behind-the-scenes business stuff when it comes to running a web design business that can take years to learn and master.

  • I’ve gone through all these steps before and made plenty of mistakes along the way so that you don’t have to. Go check out my Squarespace courses to save a bucketload of time on building the skills and knowledge you’ll need to succeed as a web designer.

3. Online Business Manager (OBM)

If organization is your superpower, becoming an Online Business Manager (OBM) might be your calling.

An OBM is like the internet’s version of a project manager or Chief Operating Officer. You’ll work closely with online business owners, managing everything from contracts to team coordination.

What You’ll Do:

  • Manage projects, negotiate contracts, hire team members, plan and oversee the execution of tasks—basically, you’ll ensure the smooth operation of the business.

Earnings:

  • OBMs typically charge $40 - $100 per hour. With a few clients, you could easily surpass $6,000 per month.

The Real Talk

  • Here’s something you need to know: not everyone who calls themselves an OBM actually has the skills to do the job properly.

A lot of Virtual Assistants (VAs) who want higher pay might slap the OBM title on their resume without truly leveling up their skills.

I’ve seen it happen firsthand—some of my business friends had to let go of their OBMs pretty quickly when it became clear that they weren’t up to the task. So, if you’re considering this path, know that it’s not just about a title; it’s about having the chops to back it up.

How to Get Started:

  • If you’re serious about becoming an OBM, you’d ideally have a background in project management or several years of experience as a VA where you’ve really honed your decision-making and independence.

  • Definitely consider taking a course from someone legit in the field. I’ve heard good things about Sarah Noked's OBM training.

  • I also recommend reading Rocket Fuel by Gino Wickman. Pay close attention to everything about what Integrators do—that’s essentially the OBM role.

Being an OBM can be demanding, especially when the business owner needs to step away or take a vacation. While it’s a reliable and well-paid role, it’s not the most freedom-giving job out there.

But if you’re a natural-born leader and love coordinating teams, this could be the perfect fit.

4. Ads Manager

Do you have a knack for creative content and analytical thinking? Managing ads for platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Google, or TikTok might be your next gig.

What You’ll Do:

As an ads manager, your day-to-day involves:

  • Coming up with ideas for unique ads.

  • Creating the copy and visuals (like videos and graphics).

  • Running and monitoring the ads on your chosen platform.

  • Helping your clients generate leads and sales by managing their ad spend and tweaking the ads for the best possible results.

Earnings:

  • Ads managers typically take on a few clients at a time, maybe 3-5, and charge anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 per month per client.

Like an OBM, this is often an ongoing, retainer-type job.

How to Get Started:

  • Learning to manage ads isn’t something you can easily pick up on the fly, especially if you’re spending someone else’s money. Trial and error can be costly!

Instead, consider taking a course, offering your services for free while you learn, or working for an ads management agency where you can get feedback from more experienced managers.

  • To get started, it might help to know how to use an ads platform. Here’s a great video on running TikTok ads by Santrel Media to help you get started.

The Catch: Managing ads for clients can be intense, especially when clients are spending tens of thousands of dollars a week.

They’re going to want someone overseeing that ad spend at all times, so this isn’t the easiest job to take time off from. But with high pay comes high responsibility!

5. Selling Website Templates

If you’re interested in web design but want a more passive income stream, consider selling website templates.

This job allows you to create a website design once and sell it multiple times to different clients.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design website templates for platforms like Squarespace, Wix, or WordPress, and sell them online. Unlike offering 1:1 web design services, this allows you to create a design once and sell it multiple times to whoever likes your template.

Earnings:

  • Website templates can sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars each. If you sell one $400 template a day, you’re looking at $12,000 a month!

The Corporate Equivalent:

Honestly, there isn’t a perfect match for this in the corporate world, but if you have experience in graphic design, site design, digital marketing, or content creation, those skills will definitely help.

How to Get Started:

  • Start by learning how to design websites on your platform of choice. Then, build an online shop to list your templates for sale. Just like content creation, you’ll also need to build an audience to sell your templates to.

  • My friend Erica from Big Cat Creative does this successfully.

She uses her YouTube channel, blog, and Instagram to build an audience and sell her Squarespace templates. We’ve even done some videos together where she shares her secrets to success.

Pro Tip: For real success as a template designer, it helps to work with clients 1:1 first.

This gives you a better understanding of what your ideal customers are looking for in a site, what design styles they prefer, and what kinds of pages they need.

This knowledge will make your templates even more appealing to potential buyers.

But how do you land that first web design client?
